How Family Mediation Works:

Your 4-Step Pathway to Resolution

A structured, confidential, and supportive process designed to keep you in control, avoid court conflict, and protect your family’s future.

Step 1: Your Confidential MIAM (60 Minutes)

  • What happens: You meet individually and privately with an accredited FMC family mediator via secure video call or phone.

  • The purpose: We discuss your current situation, explore your goals, screen for safety and suitability, and explain the available options (including eligibility for the Government £500 Voucher Scheme).

  • The other party: With your consent, we will reach out to invite the other parent or partner to attend their own separate, confidential assessment meeting.

Step 2: Choosing Your Session Format

We tailor the environment so both parties feel completely comfortable and heard:

  • Joint Video Mediation: Both participants and the mediator meet together in a structured virtual room.

  • Shuttle Mediation: If communication is difficult or you prefer not to interact directly, you remain in separate virtual breakout rooms. The mediator moves between you so you never have to see or speak to each other.

  • Flexible 24/7 Scheduling: Sessions can be booked during early mornings, evenings, or weekends around work and childcare commitments.

Step 3: The Mediation Sessions (1 to 3 Sessions)

Led by your impartial mediator, discussions focus on practical, forward-looking solutions:

  • For Child Arrangements: Establishing weekly living schedules, school holiday rotas, Christmas and birthday arrangements, and clear co-parenting communication rules.

  • For Financial Settlements: Complete, transparent financial disclosure covering the family home, mortgages, pensions, savings, and joint liabilities.

  • (Note: If mediation is unsuitable or the other party declines to take part, your mediator will promptly sign and issue the official Form C100 or Form A so you can proceed to court).

Step 4: Your Formal Outcome Documentation

Once proposals are agreed upon, your mediator drafts your formal outcome documents:

  • Parenting Plan: A clear, detailed guide setting out your agreed child arrangements.

  • Open Financial Summary (OFS): A transparent statement of all disclosed assets, income, and debts.

  • Memorandum of Understanding (MOU): The agreed framework of your financial settlement.

  • Turning it into a Binding Order: You can take your MOU and OFS to a family solicitor to be turned directly into a legally binding Consent Order approved by the court, without contentious hearings.

(Note: If mediation is unsuitable or the other party declines to take part, your mediator will promptly sign and issue the official Form C100 or Form A so you can proceed to court).
